Outside Canada/Province Coverage

For stays abroad that last fewer than 40 days: OHIP pays for some medical costs (physician, hospital) incurred abroad, but the amounts are relatively small. PSHCP coverage is more generous, paying up to Cdn $100,000 per incident. Many members also purchase additional coverage through the MEDOC Plan, particularly when traveling in the United States.  MEDOC stands for Medial Coverage Outside of Canada. The administrator of the plan is Johnson Inc .  Please note that you can download the public service FSNA/Medoc application form only through the FSNA websites.

The MEDOC Plan supplements the PSHCP $100,00 Travel Benefit with up to Cdn $5,000,000 for emergency treatment .  It can also extend coverage for a trip of up to 182 days (up to 212 days for Ontario residents). It also provides wider coverage for other eventualities, such as Cdn $8,000 of Trip Cancellation/Interruption and Delay coverage. There are three premium levels, based on a number of factors such as pre-existing conditions. A MEDOC policy is valid for a limited number of days or for coverage for any number of trips during the entire year.

Generally, to collect from OHIP, you pay the bill abroad and then submit it for (usually partial) re-imbursement.

Both PSHCP and MEDOC want you to call them before arranging treatment in a medical emergency, to get approval and instructions for out-of-province or out-of-country assistance. PSHCP provides you with a "World Access" phone number, while the MEDOC phone service is called "Assured Assistance". Even though the operators from the two services consult with each other when advising you, we encourage all members to call both services in a medical emergency.

When traveling abroad, it is advisable to always carry the following information: membership numbers for FSNA, OHIP, PSHCP, and MEDOC (if you bought it); and the World Access and Assured Assistance phone numbers. The plan operators will guide you through all the other information that you need to provide.
